BIOGRAPHY FOR JESSIE HAZEL ARMS BOTKE (1883 - 1971)

A decorative painter of note, Jessie Hazel Arms Botke would paint remarkable studies of exotic birds, foliage and flowers, and create works unlike any artist of her generation. Jessie Arms Botke frequently employed gold leaf in the backgrounds of her bird portraits, and her works are compared to the artwork frequently seen on ancient Japanese decorative screens.

Jessie Arms Botke was born in Chicago in 1883 and studied at the city's Art Institute. Botke headed to New York in 1911 where she worked with Albert Herter, who had opened his Herter Looms in February of 1908. Together they painted the mural in the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, and Botke worked with Herter's wife on many interior design projects.

In order to take a painting excursion into the west, Jessie Hazel Arms Botke bartered an arrangement with the Santa Fe Railroad for an exchange of paintings in return for fare to areas of Arizona and California. Some of Jessie Hazel Arms Botke's first exhibition works were the paintings she created on her journeys.

In 1915, Jessie Hazel Arms Botke married fellow artist Cornelis Botke and the two relocated to California. They travelled Europe in 1927, and then permanently settled in Santa Paula, California.
