Already a famous portrait painter by the time he arrived in Laguna Beach, California in 1920, Joseph Kleitsch would soon turn his considerable talents to the task of capturing the unique light and scenery of the region across his canvases. He would eventually come to be seen as one of the early California Impressionist painters, primarily for his mastery of color and his love of nature which was expressed through his painting.

Joseph Kleitsch had been born in Hungary in 1881, and by the age of seven had already trained as a painter. By the time he was seventeen he was a highly respected and successful portraitist, having painted such subjects as Franz Josef of Austria. His formal studies had taken place in Budapest, Munich, and Paris, and after he immigrated to Chicago, he furthered his training at the city's Art Institute.

By 1920 Joseph Kleitsch was settling into Laguna Beach, where he and his wife Edna would open the Kleitsch Academy. While teaching at the school, he remained an active painter, making many painting excursions in the California area, including San Francisco, Carmel and eventually heading back to Europe for more subject matter. By this point in his career much of the classic nineteenth century style of his earlier work had transformed into a Post-Impressionistic style that relied on a lighter palette and his now favorite Plein-Air landscapes, gardens, coastal and local street scenes.

Painting by Joseph Kleitsch titled: The Turquoise Buddha.
