Our Mission

Olaf Wieghorst (1899-1988) was born in Denmark and immigrated to the United States at the age of nineteen. His love of horses was evident as a child when he was performing on horseback as a stunt rider in the circus at the age of nine. Later he served in the cavalry, worked as a cowboy and even as a mounted policeman. A self-taught artist, Olaf Wieghorst traveled extensively throughout the West and became a master at portraying the life of the cowboy. His paintings are lively and masterful renditions of horses, cowboys, Indians and Western life.

In 1944, Olaf Wieghorst settled in El Cajon, California where he kept saddle horses for riding and for use as models. He was skilled in different mediums and created oil paintings, watercolor paintings, pen and ink, bronze sculptures and even copper etchings. In 1944, Olaf Wieghorst settled in El Cajon, California where he kept saddle horses for riding and for use as models.
