California Impressionist landscape artist William Wendt was born in Bentzen, Germany on February 20, 1865. For the most part William Wendt was a self-taught artist as he did not have much formal art training. When he moved to the United States at the age of fifteen he worked in Chicago as an artist in a commercial art shop and studied only briefly at the Chicago Art Institute. In his free time William Wendt's explored painting on an easel and it was during this time that the artist's own unique style of painting began to develop.

William Wendt struggled to gain notoriety as an artist while he was in Chicago. He had developed a friendship with fellow artist George Gardner Symons (1863-1930) and in the 1890's the two spent time painting in both California and England. Later they traveled to France, Germany and the East Coast of the United States. Both of these artists were painting in the Impressionist style and this put them on the forefront of American painters of their time as the Impressionist style had been started in France during the middle of the 19th century. There was a sculptress by the name of Julia Bracken whom William Wendt married in 1906. After their marriage the couple decided to make their home in California.

Painting by William Wendt titled: Laguna Hills.

Once in California, paintings by William Wendt were very well received and the artist began to obtain notoriety. Painting inside of a studio was never something William Wendt was known for and instead he would meander through the idyllic California landscape in order to find the subject matter for his next painting. His preference for painting "En Plein-Air" was ideal for capturing the magical California coastal scenes, rolling hills, barns, farmhouses and endless blue skies. His style of painting became bolder in his later years and William Wendt began to use richer colors and broader brushstrokes in his paintings.

You can recognize William Wendt's use of the Impressionist style as early as 1896-1897 when he was painting on Malibu Ranch (near Los Angeles, California) with George Gardner Symons. One can also see the Impressionist influence of artist Arthur Mathews (1860-1945) in the works of William Wendt.
