Our Mission

The mission of the E Charlton Fortune Gallery of Art is to provide an unparalleled resource for the preservation, collecting, exhibiting and sales of paintings by E Charlton Fortune (1885-1969).

An important California Impressionist artist, Euphemia Charlton Fortune was born in Sausalito, California. She is primarily known as E Charlton Fortune as she did not like the name Euphemia. Her friends called her "Effie" and she never signed her paintings using the name Euphemia. It's important to note that most artists painting in the early 20th century were men and this placed E Charlton Fortune on the cutting edge of women artists. She lived and painted primarily in San Francisco and Monterey, California and many of her early paintings were destroyed in the earthquake of 1906.

E Charlton Fortune was very fond of painting in Monterey and the Plein-Air painting opportunities the area offered. She is known for her impressionist landscape paintings, coastal landscapes, town views and portraits.
